People and Probability

Wed Jul 2, 2008, 10:27 PM
Probability is a subject that, though not covered thoroughly in math classes until at least college level, is increasingly important in our everyday lives.

What I mean by increasingly is the fact that as we try to organize our lives more and more by a set schedule, probability is something that has to be taken into accout. If Marisa is free on Wednesdays, can she hang out? Different variables need to be taken into account for just Marisa, the variables that effect just Marisa- has she done her chores? Are Marisa's parents in a good mood? Is her cell phone currently found and not missing? Even if all these events are taken into account, there is still the off chance (about 35%) that some other variable will effect whether or not she can leave the house that night.

So, with our lives growing increasingly complicated through probability, what can we do? No one can take in all the variables of any given situation, and no one can take in all variables of any future event. So, what can we do?

What every person will do will depend on the situation. Some people will try to control all the variables, leaving them in a mess when life doesn't go their way and sends them a curve ball. Other people will not attempt to control any of the variables and leave everything to chance, letting the world do to them what it will. However, the people who will be most happy in the end will be the people who are a combination of both. If some variables are controlled, and only the necessary ones, plans are flexible and changable, and this is something that is necessary where plans are concerned.

So, probability is somthing that takes over our lives and allows us to control our world and our surroundings. I believe that the best choice of plans is to create plans that are flexible because only key variables are controlled, and those are the necessary ones. If people could create plans like these for school, work, play, and other areas of our lives, life would be a lot easier.

P.S. Have any of you read "The Drunken Walk"? It's a book devoted to probability. There is a higher chance (60-80%?) that a person going to buy a lottery ticket will die from a car crash rather then winning the lottery he or she went out to buy. ^_^
